The maths
Every figure comes from what you enter, the seat price and the four formulas here. Nothing about how much time Policy Compass saves - that part is yours to find out.
01 Hourly cost
salary × 1.25 ÷ 1,680
The 1.25 adds employer National Insurance - 15% of pay above £5,000 a year in 2026-27 - and an employer pension contribution. Overheads such as office space and IT are left out, so the figure is cautious. 1,680 hours is 35 hours a week for 48 weeks.
Employer NI rates, gov.uk02 Hours today
people × weekly hours × 48 + responses × hours each
The time spent keeping up with the market and building evidence over a working year, plus the consultation responses your team writes.
03 Break-even
seat price ÷ hourly cost
The hours each person has to save a month for their seat to pay for itself. Spread across 240 working days a year, that becomes minutes a day. At the example salary on annual billing: £320 ÷ £40.45 = 7.9 hours a month, or about 24 minutes a day.
04 Share of today
break-even hours ÷ hours today
How much of today's workload Policy Compass would have to take off you to cover its cost. The smaller the share, the lower the bar.
Worked example
One person on £54,362 - the UK average for a Regulatory Specialist - spending 8 hours a week keeping up and building evidence, plus 16 consultation responses at 15 hours each. That's 52 hours a month, or £25,240 a year. A seat on annual billing costs £3,840 plus VAT, so break-even is 7.9 hours a month - about 24 minutes a working day, and 15% of today's time.
The upside it doesn't count
The calculator only counts hours. It leaves out three things that can be worth far more.
A code modification or licence change that slips past is the expensive case. It's hard to put a number on, so the calculator doesn't try.
Hearing about a consultation early in its window leaves time to brief colleagues and build a position. The calculator counts hours, not head starts.
When colleagues can ask Policy Compass themselves - in Slack or Microsoft Teams - fewer questions land with you. Only your team's own time is counted here.
Because a savings figure would be a guess. How much time Policy Compass saves depends on your work, and we'd rather you measured it than took our word for it. Break-even needs nothing but your own numbers - and the 14-day free trial is where you find the real figure.
It's the UK average salary for a Regulatory Specialist on Indeed, from 85 reported salaries (September 2026). Senior and London-based roles can pay more, so put in your own figure.
Because break-even is per person: it's the same whether you have one seat or ten. Adding colleagues scales the cost of the work and the price together, so the bar stays where it is.
No. Policy Compass is priced per seat, plus VAT: £320 a month billed annually (£3,840 per seat a year), or £400 billed monthly. See pricing.
