Using the Policy Compass app for Microsoft Teams

Before you start

You need your own Policy Compass account. Your Microsoft 365 administrator may also need to allow the app in Teams. If your organisation doesn't use Policy Compass yet, send us a message and we'll get back to you.

Connect your account

  1. Open a one-to-one chat with Policy Compass in Teams and type connect, or send it any message.
  2. It replies with a one-time code. The code works once and expires after 15 minutes.
  3. Sign in to Policy Compass in your browser, go to Settings > Integrations, enter the code and select Connect. By connecting, you agree to our Terms of Use.

Codes are only ever sent in one-to-one chats, never in a channel or group chat. Each Policy Compass organisation connects to one Microsoft 365 organisation.

Ask a question

In a one-to-one chat, type your question. In a channel or group chat, @mention Policy Compass: in a channel it replies in the same thread, and in a group chat it replies in the chat. It mentions you by name, and everyone in the conversation can see the answer. An answer can take a few minutes, so Policy Compass posts a short holding message first and updates it when the answer is ready. Answers cite their sources and link to the full conversation in Policy Compass. To see what Policy Compass can do, send it help.

In a channel or group chat, Policy Compass always answers from the Policy Compass account of the organisation that owns that chat or channel, using its business profile. So to get answers there, you need a connected Policy Compass account in that organisation. Guests that the organisation has invited into its Microsoft 365 tenant are treated as its users and need a Policy Compass account from that organisation.

If you're from another organisation

In a shared channel or group chat that another organisation owns, Policy Compass won't answer your questions, even if your own organisation uses Policy Compass, and it won't connect your account there. It replies with a short note instead. You can use Policy Compass in a one-to-one chat in your own organisation's Teams, if your organisation has it.

AI-generated answers

Answers are generated by AI from regulatory documents and your organisation's Policy Compass profile. Check the cited sources before you rely on an answer. Answers are not legal advice, and they are not a determination of whether your organisation meets its obligations.

Disconnect or switch it off

To disconnect your Teams account, type disconnect in a one-to-one chat with Policy Compass, or go to Settings > Integrations in Policy Compass. Owners and admins can disconnect anyone in their organisation, or switch the Teams app off for everyone. Removing the app from Teams stops you messaging it but does not delete your Policy Compass data - our Privacy Policy explains how to ask us to delete it.

If Policy Compass doesn't reply

Policy Compass should reply to every message it receives. If it can't answer you - for example because you haven't connected your account yet, your organisation has switched the app off, or you're from another organisation - it should tell you why and what to do next. In a channel or group chat it only receives messages that @mention it, so check that you chose Policy Compass from the @mention list rather than typing its name. If you get no reply, send us a message with roughly when you asked and in which chat or channel, and we'll look into it.
